Feminist playwright Sarah Ruhl lets us in on the "medicinal" uses of the first vibrators. Set in the late 19th-century, In The Next Room (or the vibrator play) describes how the vibrator was created not as a sexual tool, but as means to treat the growing population of female hysterics. Within a traditional structure, Ruhl is able to offer a fresh comment on our early society's misunderstanding of women while also shedding light on the ever-elusive nature of sexual pleasure.
