With a tagline like "not polluted in gimmicks, just a shot," BLT Gallery's latest exhibition promises to be an antidote to the splashy, post-produced trend in contemporary photography. Matter of Fact pairs work by Gerald Dearing, the French photographer whose black-and-white work is steeped in the spirit of la photo verité, and Steve Pyke, whose stark monochromatic portraits of people both famous and quotidian have become his trademark. Though the two artists differ in approach (where Dearing is spontaneous and ephemeral, Pyke is composed and arranged), both possess a simple, direct manner absent of manipulation.
