The Metropolitan Opera brings back Robert Lepage's cutting-edge take on Hector Berlioz's lush opera, itself based on Goethe's classic cautionary tale about bargaining with the devil. Lepage and his theatrical company Ex Machina replace the typically extravagant chandelier-strewn sets of the Met with innovative CG stage imagery that's designed to respond to the dynamic opera singers' voices. This creates an awesome and surreal atmosphere that's highlighted by live aerial acrobatics, and Lepage's methodical staging should pair nicely with the echoing nature of opera.
