Andrew D'Angelo's Gay Disco Trio, as might be surmised from their name, plays exuberant, rollicking jazz music. With D'Angelo on alto sax, Trevor Dunn on electric bass, and Jim Black on drums, the group experiments with both improvisation and composition and performs with rare energy. Dunn and Black also play in the opener, the Benefit Band, along with Chris Speed — the group was formed to raise money for D'Angelo's recent brain tumor operation. Accordingly, the event opens with a talk from D'Angelo about recovering from brain cancer and his recent trip to Tibet. It's great music and inspiration, all in one night.
