Velázquez Rediscovered

The Metropolitan Museum of Art says:

A technical examination and cleaning of one of the Met’s paintings, formerly ascribed to the workshop of Velázquez, has revealed a portrait by the great 17th-century Spanish master himself. Velázquez is among the most admired Old Master painters, and his work rarely enters the market. Portrait of a Man is on view through February 7, 2010, alongside information about its provenance, attribution, and restoration. The rehabilitation of this painting represents a major "new" acquisition for the Museum, which has the finest collection of works by the master in America.
