This juicy satire of the theatre has all the right ingredients — daft fools, hard-hearted individuals, starry-eyed innocents, and many over-the-top egomaniacs. So Help Me God!'s most selfish is it's leading lady (a looming and dramatic Kristen Johnsten), an aging star of stage who will do everything and anything to stay on top. Though written in the late '20s by Chicago's original author (Maurine Dallas Watkins), the play became derailed by the stock-market crash, and later, Watkins' subsequent born-again-Christian conversion. So Help Me God! is not without flaws, but even 80 years later (in its first revival) its charm and wit are hard to ignore.
