A 500-year-old devotional tradition in India, Kirtan involves a call and response of hymns or mantras. Long Island native Krishna Das made a pilgrimage to India in the late '60s and found his life's work in the music via the Bhakti Yoga teachings; today, he's Kirtan's most well-known singer in the US. The style of KD (as his loyal fans call him) mirrors many of his counterparts, lending itself to songs that start with a slow, meditative tempo and finish in a fast-paced and euphoric celebration. His energy spreads almost hypnotically to the crowd, inspiring fellow chanters to sing, tap, clap, and dance feverishly along, while creating an enchanting experience for all.
