French composer and provocateur Claude Debussy sent tremors through the opera world in 1902 with his scandalous Pelleas et Melisande. Next in his experimental crosshairs was the work of famed gloomster Edgar Allan Poe. Debussy set out to create a work based on both The Devil in the Belfry and The Fall of the House of Usher, but in a Poe-worthy twist, he died before finishing. Now, the would-be masterpiece beats on with this US premiere based on his completed piano sketches. FIAF partners with Opéra Français de New York for an hour-long work featuring four singers, an actor, and a pianist who pedals haunting tunes in a lugubrious library.
