Tarell Alvin McCraney, one of America's most celebrated young writers and the winner of the inaugural New York Times Outstanding Playwright Award, returns to The Public with a trilogy of modern-day storie of kinship, love, heartache and coming-of-age centered around an extended family and community in the Bayou. McCraney's stories traverse the gritty and lyrical, urban and mythic. Be among the first to hear the words of one of the most startlign new voices of the 21st century, who is thrilling audiences around the globe by pushing the boundaries of language, form, and sexuality in provocative, musical and poetic ways. This trilogy, offered over two performances and performed by an ensemble company, can be viewed independently, or in either order, but the plays have a special resonance when experienced together. Presented by The Public Theater in association with McCarter Theatre.

Playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney funnels the hopes and dreams of his inner-city characters through a Greek tragedy-style presentation complete with a chorus that sings inspirational hymns to great effect. James Schuette's deceptively simple set and Tina Landau's and Robert O' Hara's fluid staging allow the strong cast to shine in this epic trilogy about a family that struggles to love and understand each other while dealing with run-ins with the law, repressed sexuality, and strong religious beliefs. McCraney has an ear for dialogue that's both poetic and gritty, and although his device of having characters speak their stage directions grows tiresome, there's much to love in this ambitious new work.
