Stephen Sondheim's melancholic farce receives a stirring revival due to Trevor Nunn's expertly delicate touch. Nunn elicits several nuanced performances from his cast, including Catherine Zeta Jones as fading starlet Desiree Armfeldt. Zeta Jones plays the part with grace and quiet desperation, nailing the climactic "Send in the Clowns" with disarming honesty. Distinguished British stage actor Alexander Hanson is equally affecting as Frederik Egerman, a middle-aged man torn between his love for Desiree and his much younger wife. Sondheim and author Hugh Wheeler find a perfect balance between the absurd and profound in this slice-of-sexual-life play that continues to resonate decades after its first performance.
