The Hypochondriac is an outstanding update of Moliere's The Imaginary Invalid. Conceived by director Matthew AJ Gregory with Shira Gregory, Chris Harcum, and Greg Tito and set in present-day New York, this adaptation cleverly satirizes the profit-driven American health industry. The Cell's elegant and intimate brownstone space sets the scene perfectly for the zany events that follow. Shira Gregory's charming and expressive reactions stand out and complement Harcum's comic posturing as the overbearing father. Throughout, director Gregory lets the hilarity unfold organically while keeping the action moving; he even creates brilliant mock pharmaceutical ads for between the scenes.
