Kristen Baker thinks of her painting process as analogous to a racetrack, based half on precise control, half on wild chaos. Her work is indeed as tense as a high-speed chase, and as exuberant: she layers bright colors upon each other, building outward from the canvas, often creating her shapes with tape outlines before ripping the tape away, leaving a suggestion of random form. The result is rich with texture and depth, walking the line between representative and abstract. Splitting Twilight is Baker's third solo show at Deitch; her work has also been exhibited at the Whitney, the Guggenheim, the Pompidou, and most recently at the Saactchi Gallery in London.
