Purposely placing his showings in the third quarter of his residency, Will Rawls is using the process of performance to continue his investigation inspired by his travel through the Balkans and motivated by President Obama’s (and his own) mixed heritage. The work explores the connections between nation-building techniques, historical literacy, rhythmic movement, and compositional forms in choreography. In The Planet-Eaters, the dance studio becomes an informal nation-state, cobbled from existing cultures, that operates via specific rules about labor, public speech, mythology, history, energy, and food consumption. The work questions if our emerging global heritage creates new strategies for citizens, press, and artists to reconstruct culture. If so, how does ignorance and scrambled information play a part in this reconstruction? Striking a balance between political and historical ideas, Will plays with staging, movement and choreography as an important means of cultural production. This work-in-progress showing will feature the dancing of Cynthia Koppe, Will Rawls, Letitia Spangler, and Marguerite Wade.
