In this lecture Bernard Faure, Kao Professor in Japanese Religion in the Department of Religion at Columbia University, discusses the role of mandalas—graphic depictions of the Buddhist universe and its myriad realms and deities—in Japanese cultural and social life during the medieval period. This lecture is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Japanese Mandalas: Emanations and Avatars, on view through November 29. Meet in the Bonnie J. Sacerdote Lecture Hall in the Uris Center for Education at 2 p.m.
