2009. Andrew Bujalski. USA. 100 min. Color. Starring Tilly Hatcher & Maggie Hatcher
“One of the finest, most deftly talented filmmakers currently working in America.”–Mark Olsen, LA Times
“A remarkably subtle, even elegant movie.”–A.O. Scott, The New York Times
Jeannie, who has been in a wheelchair since youth, co-owns a used and vintage clothing store with her semi-estranged friend Amanda, while her (real-life) twin sister Lauren is between jobs. Tensions are mounting between the friends—their management styles clashing, communication problems getting exacerbated—and threat of a lawsuit is implied. Jeannie is feeling particularly vulnerable because her partner’s lawyer father is the one who drew up the contract. Various strategies for dealing with the Amanda crisis are discussed and pursued and even her mother’s partner oversteps her step-motherly bounds and tries to get involved. Beeswax is a story about families, real and imagined, people taking care of each other when they want to, when they need to, when they ought to, and those awkward moments that bring all of them together.
While you watch the film, enjoy a glass of wine and a light snack in the intimate cabaret atmosphere of the Leonard Nimoy Thalia.
