The delightful cast of Ernest in Love doesn't let a weak score get in the way of this whimsical story about Victorian-era dating. Noah Racey (Jack) and Ian Holcomb (Algernon) stand out in particular, each relishing dialogue that's lifted near-verbatim from its source, Oscar Wilde's classic comedy of manners The Importance of Being Earnest. While the songs generally pale alongside the repartee, there are a few strong numbers like first-act closer "A Wicked Man" and "Perfection," a cute duet reminiscent of My Fair Lady.
