Theatrical director Bart Sher (South Pacific, The Light in the Piazza) re-envisions Jacques Offenbach's popular opera about the crazy imagination of its title character, German writer E.T.A. Hoffmann. Constructing a Kaftkaesque magical journey, he pits different expressions of the mind against each other, while exploring Offenbach's late-life desire for acceptance as a serious composer after a career spent writing operettas. Sher's production seems very ambitious, but is supported by a strong cast and brought to life by an accomplished production crew, including Tony Award-winning designers Michael Yeargan and Catherine Zuber. Warnings of partial nudity add to the intrigue.
