In Michael Haneke's latest film, a series of mysterious acts of violence disturbs a small, puritanical Northern German village on the eve of World War I. There's never a satisfying explanation of their origin. Instead, Haneke focuses on how people react in the face of fear, using the austere setting to offer a glimpse into the formative years of the generation that would form the Nazi party. This sobering and mature work from the sensationalist director of Funny Games (1997) and The Piano Teacher (2001) won the Palme d'Or at Cannes this year.
