Metropolitan Opera House says…

There's something about Carmen — for her, men cast aside principles to fall headlong into a life of crime. Directed by veteran Richard Eyre, this starkly realistic and visceral update of Bizet's classic opera sets the mood with an immediate streak of blood across the curtain — a truly striking image in the Met's chandelier-adorned digs. Aided throughout by Rob Howell's simple yet transformative sets, this departure from Franco Zeffirelli's famously ornate style pays off with a terrific final scene as well as choreographer Christopher Wheeldon's interlude ballets, which powerfully highlight the tension of love unfulfilled.
