Symphony Space says…

A global financial crisis, war and terrorism, a major building project in Flushing: not this new year, but 1939. Reflecting simultaneous optimism for a new decade and fear of the global chaos soon to follow, it was a watershed year for culture. Symphony Space features some of the 70-year-old creations that redefined the term "American." They run the gamut, from Gone With the Wind premiering with a hype that never faded, to Charles Ives' Piano Sonata No. 2, an influential piece receiving its first public performance that year. The Thalia Book Club honors Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep and the debut of Philip Marlowe. And the big band sounds of Miller, Basie, and Goodman will swing again at a free Jitterbug Dance Jam.
