David Comer's justly praised production (he took home the '09 Obie for Outstanding Director, the play won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Revival) continues at the Barrow — an appropriate environ for Thornton Wilder's Grover's Corner, as it houses both a theatre and community-outreach programs. There is nothing Comer does as director, or in his role as the Stage Manger, that radically departs from Our Town's deceptively simple story of life in early-20th century New Hampshire. Rather, he makes resourceful use of stillness and silence, turning characters into complete human beings. This is especially true of sweethearts George (James McMenamin) and Emily (Jennifer Grace). While forever bound in a moving and surprising wedding, here, they are two very separate beings: he needing guidance, she brimming with potential. This Our Town is home to immediacy and honesty. Bring tisues.
