Despite being centuries old, there's always something new about opera. Gotham Chamber Opera proves this by marking the bicentennial of Joseph Haydn's death with the premiere Manhattan staging of his 1779 chamber opera L'isola disabitata (The Desert Island). Making the dual celebration complete is the company directing debut of contemporary-choreography heavyweight Mark Morris. Like most sopranos, Constanza is royally pissed off: her husband Gernando abandoned her on an uninhabited island along with her kid sister, Silvia. Thirteen years later, Gernando returns with his younger, unmarried friend Enrico (cue Silvia's longing). Seems they would have gotten there sooner if it hadn't been for those marauding pirates. Don't worry, this is one opera with a happy ending.
