Back in 1982, artist Agnes Denes staged an environmental coup (not to mention a conceptual beaut) by planting two acres of wheat in downtown Manhattan; Wheatfield – A Confrontation yielded a half-ton of grain. Culled from the Whitney's permanent collection, Sites highlights art that transforms, transgresses, or incorporates its museum-made barriers. The exhibit includes a shoal of diverse artists, including Denes, but look specifically for earth and performance-art pieces, which tend to transform the viewer from a let-me-gaze aesthete to an on-guard participant.
