While his recent work has fixated more on the nature of violence, no other filmmaker has delved into our unholy relationship with machines, viruses, and surgical equipment quite like David Cronenberg. And with his early low-budget flicks leading up the genre-bending Videodrome (1983), few had exploited the populist modes of horror and gore to explore these ideas in all their creepy, erotic wonder. It's been a while since many of these sci-fi terrors have played NYC screens, and as genetic engineering and virtual reality play catch up with Cronenberg's vision, the chant "Death to Videodrome! Long live the new flesh!" resonates more each year.
