The National Theater of the United States of America (NTUSA) is much more subversive than its official name implies. This fearless ensemble specializes in dissecting distinctly American forms of entertainment, and their latest production, Chautauqua!, is a savvy take-off of the Chautauqau circuit, a popular series of educationally oriented lectures and performances that toured the United States from 1874 to the Great Depression. Commissioned by the 2007 Spalding Gray Award, Chautauqua! is a highly subjective roller-coaster ride through the history of the US, with an eye on the relationship between money, art, and highbrow-vs-mainstream culture.
