Mars-1's (aka Mario Martinez) paintings could be scenes from a PlayStation game — if only game-designers had the courage to explore the liquid nature of reality the way he does: robots melt into organic forms that belch rainbow-tinged steam, and geometric landscapes suggest a narrative inhabited by space aliens and their dreams. Despite his penchant for surrealism, his images wouldn't look out of place spray-painted on a schoolyard wall, and have already been adapted as vinyl toys available for purchase at the nerd-chic mecca Kidrobot. Mars-1's solo show at Jonathan Levine offers viewers the chance to step into his world and dream a little cyborg dream.
