Doug Varone's Alchemy receives its New York premiere as the centerpiece in tonight's program. Inspired by the beheading of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, Varone forgoes telling the story outright, but the work's expressiveness conveys a powerful, cathartic emotionality. Dancers contort and intertwine their bodies, displaying the intense satisfaction and impermanence of human interaction. Steve Reich's minimalist score combines text from the biblical Book of Daniel with Pearl's own words. Rounding out the bill is 2006's Lux — set to music by Philip Glass — and Tomorrow, featuring accompaniment from soprano Theodora Hanslowe.
