K'naan is a difficult dude to pin down. As a child of Somalia, his concept of growing up on the streets puts most hardcore rappers to shame. However, he has a lot more to offer than righteous anger. Mixing bouncy instrumentation and elaborate arrangements with world-wise wordplay, he's quite the chameleon: at times, he's a dead ringer for Eminem; at others, he brings Africa straight into your living room. His sophomore album, Troubadour (released this month), has an equally eclectic array of guest stars, ranging from Mos Def and Damien Marley to Metallica's Kirk Hammett — it may seem random, but it's just proof of the artist's ever-widening appeal. Tonight he hits S.O.B.'s, headlining Hot 97's Who's Next series.
