A playground altercation between two preteen boys escalates to full-on war when their parents get involved in French playwright Yasmina Reza's brutally funny comedy of (bad) manners. Michael (James Gandolfini) and Veronica (Marcia Gay Harden) invite Alan (Jeff Daniels) and Annette (Hope Davis) to their home to discuss the incident over coffee and clafouti which gives way in real-time to brandy and cigars as blame is doled out and uncomfortable truths are revealed — hamster cruelty, disturbing terms of endearment, and defective pharmaceuticals just scratch the surface. The uniformly strong all-star cast relishes Reza's juicy dialogue, which is aided by Christopher Hampton's spot-on translation that transports the action to Cobble Hill (from the original Paris). Director Michael Warchus' fast-paced staging teems with physical comedy that practically explodes off the stage.
