Downtown docu-musical-theatre collective the Civilians created This Beautiful City from interviews they conducted in Colorado Springs, the conservative evangelical capital of the country, and home of Ted Haggard's New Life church. The show documents the rise of conservatism in this once-secular college town, from the perspectives of both true believers and their minority counterparts. The Haggard story broke in the middle of the writing process, but its inclusion is just a part of the larger world that writers Steven Cosson and Jim Lewis create. One of the most compelling characters is a transexual architect who's later cast out from the town she helped build, while Michael Friedman's songs convey the seductive power of faith.
