Kyoshi Kurosawa normally plies his trade in the horror genre, so Tokyo Sonata, a meditation about modern domesticity, marks a compelling departure in tone for the Japanese director. When businessman Ryeshi loses his job, he joins an underworld of the secretly unemployed, a group of men who hide out every day to keep their shameful status from their families. His wife frets over how their sons are drifting away from her but fails to note her husband's trauma. In this shadowy, carefully framed film, our universal failure to note the misery of those closest to us emerges in painstakingly specific details.
