Gleefully existing at the intersection of camp and high-brow culture, the Wooster Group's La Didone sets a new standard for genre-bending theatrical productions. In La Didone, the troupe crosses Francesco Cavalli's 17th-century opera about Dido and Aeneas with the 1965 sci-fi action flick Terrore nello Spazio (aka Planet of the Vampires). Yes, it is completely wacky, but director-extraordinaire Elizabeth LeCompte has teased out an astonishing number of parallels between the two stories — think silver armor/space suits, and boats/rocketships — to chart both narratives through unknown territory. Very much an ensemble in its approach, the Wooster Group manages to craft an alternate universe where this interwoven staging makes sense, collaborating to position La Didone as a future cult classic.
