Lion Theatre at Theatre Row says…

The punny title of Mark Dunn's BELLES refers to both the now-archaic telephone company nickname "Ma Bell" and the six Walker sisters of Memphis. When their mother falls ill, the family (five of the six sisters now live far from home) play catch-up-and-comfort, all via the telephone. An extended phone conversation might make for static lines, but Dunn manages to make this concept intriguing and keep the dialogue fast-paced; he also updated his 1989 script with, naturally, cell phones. Director Marisa Viola moves her cast without confusion within the cozy, multi-purpose set, and, casting-wise, it helps that these women could actually pass for sisters.
