Contrary to what its name implies, the Obie award-winning Nature Theater of Oklahoma is based in New York, and is known for its wildly inventive and entertaining productions. Rambo Solo treats First Blood — the novel that is the basis for Sylvester Stallone's action movie series — as a pillar of the western literary canon, and features Zachary Oberzan in sly, tour-de-force performance as he retells the story against the backdrop of a video triptych of his own reenactment of First Blood in his small New York apartment. The macho material seems like an unlikely frame for essential questions about theatrical narrative and performance, but Rambo Solo proves that substance often lies not in the story, but in the telling.
