Argentine opera singer Josephine Scaglione's magnetically angelic presence contrasts beautifully with the unforgiving world around her in Arthur Laurents' gritty revival of West Side Story. In this imaginative reworking, pieces of dialogue and certain lyrics are delivered in Spanish, which illuminates the tensions at the heart of the show. Laurents wrote the original book, so the nonagenarian's intimate knowledge of the story (based on Romeo and Juliet, the original "star-cross'd" lovers) serves this ambitious production well. Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's classic score/libretto is as achingly brilliant as ever, and will stay with you long after the lights fade.
