Hunger takes its aesthetic and narrative cues from its protagonist, IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands (Michael Fassbender). Focusing on Sands' last 66 days of life, spent in an almost idyllically grim Irish prison, the film strikes out on a beautifully defiant tone — a youthful tone really — full of high color and strong ideology. But as the strike wears on with no governmental capitulation on the horizon, Sands hardens into an old man overnight, and the film swings into a austere-looking, philosophical introspection rarely seen on screen about what, truly, merits the surrender of life. This is visual artist Steve McQueen's first wide-release film, and it is an extraordinary achievement on every level.
