David Levine's brainy, interactive theatre piece, Venice Saved: A Seminar, gathers actors and the audience around the table to debate political theatre, and its relevance in American culture. Nominally taking political philosopher Simone Weil's unfinished play Venise Sauvée (1943) as its topic, Venice Saved imagines ways of staging Weil's work in 2009 by considering a variety of hot-button issues — from the economy and public policy to torture and the Iraq war. Conceptually, Venice Saved is brilliant, but it is also reminiscent of a college seminar: a stimulating discussion that, depending on each evening's draw of audience and actors, may come complete with highly knowledgeable enthusiasts who dominate the conversation.
