Note:
This is the world premiere of poet Anne Carson's collected translations of Agamemnon, (Aeschylus), Elektra (Sophocles; translated in 2001), and Orestes (Euripides).
CSC's production of poet Anne Carson's An Oresteia — a new translation of three separate Greek tragedies — is a fascinating combination of plainspokenness and historical insight. Carson emphasizes the extreme folly of Troy and its lingering aftermath in Aeschylus' Agamemnon. The victorious Argosy general (Steve Mellor) still receives an unforgettable "mission accomplished!" from wife Clytemnestra (Stephanie Roth Haberle), but now the most violent part of Sophocles' Elektra is not the double murder that ends it, but Clytemnestra's relationship with her daughter (Annika Boras), perhaps the soul of An Oresteia. Microphones, lighting effects, and ancient Greek are simultaneously used in Orestes to highlight the confusion that besets the heir to the family's misfortune (Mickey Solis) and Euripides' unsparing detachment.
