Tina Howe brings offbeat wit to nursing homes in her well-observed new play Chasing Manet. In it, a famous painter who's lost her sight and an ebullient and sassy woman with late-stage Alzheimer's plan an escape to Paris aboard the Queen Elizabeth 2. It's the "blind leading the crippled" as Jane Alexander says with defiance as the blind painter. Howe mines lots of humor from this otherwise desperate situation but never goes for cheap laughs. The result is a fully realized portrait of what it means to age and the importance of taking chances on crazy adventures.
