The Public Theater says…

Christopher Durang's latest satirical comedy, Why Torture Is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them, doesn't take itself too seriously despite its serious subject matter, and that's a good thing. The playwright tackles issues such as terrorism, nationalism, and torture with a feather duster, but still manages to make several strong, if familiar, points about the current state of America's place in the world. Durang's biggest ally is director Nicholas Martin, whose decision to push the play ever further over the top pays off. The talented cast is having a ball with their wacky characters — even Laura Benanti manages to shine as the straight-faced heroine. Too bad the play cops out at the end, allowing the much less interesting romantic plot line to take over.
