At a time when the American cinematic landscape is as barren as a date between two mumblecore actors, North Carolina-born Ramin Bahrani stands out as one of the true US auteurs under age 40. His first two features, Chop Shop (2007) and Man Push Cart (2005), depicted the human condition with an old-soul melancholy that rarely sneaks onscreen. His latest, Goodbye Solo, takes a hackneyed movie scenario — the unlikely friendship between a Senegalese taxi driver and an aging white Southern man — and swiftly moves past its clichéd premise to mine the sincere emotionality that distinguishes all of Bahrani's films.
