Given the current debate about living in a post-racial United States, Tracey Scott Wilson's The Good Negro is a particularly timely new drama. This fictionalized, behind-the-scenes account of the Civil Rights movement had a sold-out run during The Public's LAB series last year, and the fully staged, taut production (again directed by Liesl Tommy) features an outstanding cast that is utterly invested in exploring the complexities of character. Focusing on three leading figures within the struggle, and the challenges they face organizing Birmingham, Alabama at a crucial moment, The Good Negro charts its own course — lit by personal frailties and humor — through this pivotal era.
