Deborah Zoe Laufer's End Days is a comedic and carefully observed portrait of a family that left NYC for the suburbs after 9/11. Sixteen-year-old Rachel Stein is going through a goth phase; her mother has become an evangelical, born-again Christian; and her father, who now lives in his pajamas, spends the day asleep at the kitchen table. Their new neighbor, a teenage Elvis wannabe with Asperger's syndrome, is obsessed with Rachel, and inserts himself fully — albeit awkwardly — into her family. End Days is often hysterically funny, but within Laufer's biting dialogue lies a thoughtful examination of religion, science, and the needs of ordinary people.
