We first heard about Plato's Retreat from a small cameo in Spike Lee's Summer of Sam. Years later, we didn't need much more enticement than its legendary rep for "sex, drugs, and disco" to go check out American Swing. This new doc takes a brutally close look at the, ah, rise (and fall) of NYC's famous swingers club through a series of interviews with former patrons (including performance artist/sex-ed pro Annie Sprinkle and acclaimed director Melvin Van Peebles) and employees, like the still-married couple who managed the joint. Peppered with never-before-seen archival footage from Plato's, the flick is at turns nostalgic, endearing, and funny. But it's almost never sexy.
