Director Jan Troell hails from a different, more staid era of Swedish filmmaking, a time before vampires chewed up that country's cinematic landscape (Let the Right One In). His latest, Everlasting Moments, offers a lovely soliloquy about the power of looking at your life at the remove afforded by a lens. In it, Maria, a working-class mother married to an alcoholic brute in 1910, finds a way to save herself and her family by making use of a camera she wins in a lottery. Earnest and painterly, this movie slowly works its way to a conclusion about acceptance without bitterness that may not be fashionable, but is truly timely.
