The central character of Robert Lyons' Red-Haired Thomas is a snarky Thomas Jefferson (Alan Benditt). The lively patriot tells the tale of his "sons": Cliff (Peter Sprague), a gambler on a permanent losing streak and Iftikhar (Danny Beiruti), an immigrant newspaper vendor. Their once-cordial relationship is now ugly because of political and family tensions (Nicole Raphael doubles as their precocious daughters). It doesn't help that Cliff's ambitious, power-suited wife Marissa (Danielle Skraastad) has her sights set on investing in Iftikhar's troubled homeland. Director Oliver Butler skillfully handles the freewheeling reality shifts, echoing both Jeffersonian idealism and contemporary globalization. The sassy dialogue — skewering everything from revolution to the Mets and Yankees — sounds like it was written yesterday.
