A collaborative effort between San Francisco's Shotgun Players and New York downtown theatre ensemble Banana Bag & Bodice, Beowulf: A Thousand Years of Baggage comes to town after racking up a slew of awards in the Bay. Beowulf: A Thousand Years of Baggage resurrects and dissects the epic Beowulf poem by hewing it into what the creators call a "songplay." Given that Beowulf represents an oral history tradition, this highly original musical rendition is less of a stretch than it initially seems. The deliberately rough-around-the-edges production outlines the basics of the Beowulf tale, frames it with a gloss of academic criticism, and adds warrior girls for extra punch.
