The Roots are many things to many people, beloved by jazzbos and hip-hop heads alike for their thought-provoking lyrics, funky hooks, and propulsive beats. The Philly-based band is known for marathon sets and a gruelling tour schedule, so this weekly residency at the Highline (while the group's in town backing up Jimmy Fallon on Late Night) is a welcome change of pace. If past guests are any indicator — rappers Talib Kweli and Pharoahe Monch; soul singers Raheem DeVaughn and Chrisette Michele — then ?uestlove, Black Thought, and co. have plenty of gifted friends waiting in the wings.
