Theatrical-upstart troupe the Attic presents Moonchildren, the beloved (if underperformed) debut work by Michael Weller. The play subtly captures the zeitgeist of the mid-'60s, focusing on an unsettled group of college seniors sharing an off-campus attic during a formative and turbulent year. Weller's play premiered in 1971 with a cast of future stars — including 24-year-old James Woods and 23-year-old Christopher Guest — garnering several awards and rave reviews. However, the playwright's near-journalistic detachment and disarming sense of humor only enables Moonchildren to improve with age. Without sacrificing context, the Attic's young and talented cast transcends the play's historical moment by uncovering a contemporary vitality in its carefully crafted characters.
