Robert Falls' strikingly visceral production breathes new life into Eugene O'Neill's problematic, oedipal love triangle of a play. In other hands, the overblown intensity and grandiose gestures would seem laughable — how many people actually shake their fists at the sky? — but the actors sell it with such intensity that the instinct to scoff is dismissed during this highly watchable and intermissonless one-act. Brian Dennehy is a force to be reckoned with as the macho patriarch who asserts his vitality by getting hitched to a much younger woman, the hauntingly seductive Carla Gugino. Pablo Schreiber matches Dennehy's intensity, breaking out from his father's oppressive shadow and into the arms of his all-too-loving step-mom in this scorching revival.
